About You and Your Journey
1. For those who don’t know you yet, who is Shakezpeare? How did your journey into hip-hop begin?
Shakezpeare is the alter ego of a street kid, an ex-con, and a survivor of the darker side of the 80s and 90s. Hip hop was everything we were at the time, so pursuing it felt natural.
2. What inspired the name Shakezpeare? Is there a deeper meaning or story behind it?
William Shakespeare was a renowned writer. Most of his works reflect tragic stories of his time and surroundings. That’s what rap is too—wordplay, storytelling, and often inspired by tragic events. Being from Coventry City in the West Midlands, in "Shakezpeare country," it makes sense for me to tell stories.
3. How would you describe your sound and style to someone listening to your music for the first time?
My sound is impulsive, true, unique, and unlike anything you’ve heard before, good or bad.
4. Was there a specific moment when you realized that hip-hop was what you wanted to pursue seriously?
I still haven't fully realized that. I'm just self-medicating.
5. What’s been the most significant turning point in your career so far?
The years I spent touring with legends who became friends have shaped my career immensely.

Creativity and Influences
6. What’s your creative process like when it comes to writing or recording music? Do you have any habits or routines that help you stay focused?
Everything is a moment. I can’t record things twice. Nothing is ever planned. I always record alone so no one disrupts the frequency I'm vibrating on at that moment. I can convert that energy into ones and zeros for you to understand.
7. Who are your biggest influences—musical or otherwise—and how have they shaped your craft?
Tracy Chapman was a huge influence for me. I grew up listening to her album over and over again. It taught me how important it is to express the trauma that life piles on us in a clear and poetic way. Always be yourself; never try to fit in.
8. Your lyrics often tell vivid stories. Where do you draw inspiration for the themes and messages in your music?
As I mentioned, my inspiration comes from lived experiences.
9. Do you have a favorite track that you’ve created? What makes it special to you?
"Rydah Music" is special to me. It’s been in my live set list since my first show and has never failed to get a crowd going, no matter the location.
10. When you’re not creating music, how do you spend your time? What keeps you inspired outside of the studio?
I spend my time looking after kids or creating some form of media or art. It never stops.

The UK Hip-Hop Scene
11. What are your thoughts on the current UK hip-hop scene? How do you see yourself contributing to or standing out in this space?
The UK hip-hop scene is okay but could be better. It’s become too politically correct, and the scene has shifted towards a more middle-class focus. Personally, I feel I stand out wherever I go.
12. What challenges have you faced as an artist, and how have you managed to overcome them?
I haven't faced many challenges. I've achieved most of what I've set out to do. I do get a bit sloppy with promoting my work. I prefer to create; if you see it, you see it when the time is right. What I do isn't for everybody.
13. How do you connect with your fans? Is there a particular moment with your audience that’s stood out to you?
I connect with fans through social media or at live shows. A memorable moment was signing tattoos in Manchester in 2018 on tour with Killah Priest. Touring with Dom Pachino in Europe also stands out. But the most epic experience was doing the "Council Estate of Mind" tour with Skinnyman straight after COVID. We hit many places, and it was pretty much sold out everywhere.
14. Who are some UK hip-hop artists you think people should keep an eye on right now?
People should stop subscribing to mainstream platforms and support artists on their own pages or Bandcamp. Mainstream has no soul; the underground is where the heartbeat of music is. There are tons of great artists there—take your pick.

Engaging the Audience
15. What do you hope people feel or take away when they listen to your music?
I hope they feel insight, truth, anger, fear, love, and life.
16. Are there any upcoming projects, releases, or collaborations you’re excited about and want to share with us?
No, no, no. But I'm always cooking something up.
17. If you could perform anywhere in the world, what would be your dream venue?
I've already done it with Skinnyman at Scala London with a live band.

Streetwear and Culture
18. What are your thoughts on the streetwear scene today, and how do you see it connecting with hip-hop culture?
Fashion is everything to street and hip-hop culture.
19. If you had to describe your personal style in three words, what would they be?
To the point, viscous, and truthful.
20. How important is fashion and style to you as an artist? Does it play a role in how you present yourself on and off stage?
Fashion is very important. I have to be fresh and stand out. I want to look different from the rest, so I’m always on the lookout for quality brands that are fresh and ahead of the game.
